How to Effectively Reduce Depresion

By Paul Ghossain

Everything seems to be going wrong in your life. You are overwhelmed by it all, and just want to sleep and not think anymore. You find yourself crying so easily when you watch an almost touching moment in a movie. The exact type of moment you would never find yourself crying to. You are feeling so damned miserable, and you just can't understand why.

The reason for this is depression. Everybody goes through it. Sometimes it can get so bad that professional help is needed. For those that go through mild cases of depression, there are ways to reduce it to a controllable level;

The first thing you need to do is take a step back and be your own spectator. This allows you to take control away from your emotions, allowing yourself to take a look at your life with a lot more logic and reason. Now you are able to move to the next step.

Stop watching the news for a while. Have you noticed just how much bad news there is compared to good news? The media thrives on this. While they are making a load of money, you are just helping your depression to grow out of control.

If you need to watch movies, watch comedies instead. By allowing yourself to laugh more, you are allowing the flow of positivism to enter your life once again. This can only be good. Laughter really is one of the best medicines on this planet.

Go very easy on the coffee and alcohol, and replace them with water and fruit juice instead. Lower the fat intake in your diet and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. By eating a healthy diet, you are allowing your body to help your mind fight against depression.

Get at least twenty minutes of sun everyday. Lack of sun is one of the main reasons why people get depressed.

Start exercising. Exercising allows your body to produce endorphins which are endogenous opioid biochemical compounds that produce a feeling of well being.

Quite often, mild depression can be controlled and reduced. However, there are people out there that need more than just a healthy life style. If nothing is helping you, please don't hesitate to seek professional help. Understand that there are many effective treatments out there to help you fight your depression and live a happier, more meaningful life.

Depresion, Suicide, Drugs and Alcohol (A Short Commentary) in Huancayo, Peru

By Dennis Siluk Ed.D.

I was reading the papers this last week (from Huancayo, Peru), saw a lot of suicides in them (and I wasn't surprise to find the results), and people asking "Why this, and that?" Looking for reasons for the ongoing massive suicides in Huancayo (the highest rates for suicides in Peru); and everyone looking in the wrong place, it is the dilemma of depression we are looking at (suicide enhanced by alcohol, in any form).

First of all, there are various reasons for depression and suicide (depression can be a disorder, or a chemical imbalance within us, second, it can be simply sadness, and I'll talk about that in a moment), but when you drink alcohol, in any form (to include beer) you are getting a double dose of depression. Alcohol is a "Depressant" a drug, this is something no producer of alcohol will admit, or tell you--lest you stop drinking, and God forbid, they lose their profit.

After two beers it becomes a catalyst for depression, like it or not. And if you have any problems at home (or perhaps `poverty, or old age is playing a part in it), or perhaps a loss, like a death in the family, or job, or house, or any loss, alcohol will enhance the state of depression you are already in, and thus, if you have suicide tendencies, the chances are with alcohol you will follow through on them.

In closing, everyone wants the problem to go away, without treatment, change in one's lifestyle, or effort, just fade into oblivion; and those producing alcohol, want all the rights with no responsibility to continue the way they have, producing, advertising, and buying, and paying those to hide the problem from the public, matter of fact, they get rewards from public officials--how unseeingly can we be. Until we get serious over this issue or problem or call it a situation, it will continue to kill our loved ones.

What Did the Winners of the Last Recession Do Right?

By Izzy Ginzberg

There is no question that many world economies are experiencing financial crises. However, when it comes to a recession, there is still much debate as to what qualifies as a recession, and whether or not we are in one. Regardless, no one will argue that we have experienced recessions in the past.

In any recession, there are winners and there are losers. Here are a few things the winners always do right.

Remain calm - This is clearly easier said than done, especially when it seems like the economy is collapsing all around you. What are you going to do if...? Stop! People get into the most trouble during a recession when they stop thinking clearly, and poor economies are often driven (if not caused) by panic. Winners don't add to the panic, they profit it from it.

Diversify - Any recession will have a bigger impact in some areas than others. Diversifying will allow you to take a hit in one area, while coming out ahead in others. For example, while Starbucks saw a huge decrease (who wants to spend $5 for coffee when money is tight?), McDonald's saw huge gains (who wouldn't want to get a decent meal for $3 when money is tight?).

Have reserves - When things start falling to pieces, those who have the least amount of savings will feel the most pressure. Even if a winner's savings dwindles, they still have a cushion to get through a recession. Yes, this takes some foresight, but it is possible.

Seize opportunities - Doing the above three things allows the winners to seize golden opportunities when they arise. In the stock market, those who are panicking are probably selling their shares at a devalued cost, out of the fear that they will fall even farther. What does this mean for someone who remains calm and has extra capital? It means they can get one heck of a deal.

None of these things should come as a shock to anyone. In fact, I believe the losers from any recession know these things, too. The only difference is that they don't follow through on them. Now that you know what the winners have done in past recessions, you can learn from them and do the same thing. When you do, you can take it all in stride and count yourself among the winners in the next recession.

What Types of Depression Are There?

By Tina Warner
Expert Author Tina Warner

We all hear of people, family and friends, respond to the question "how are you?" with "Oh, I'm so depressed." At times, we hear that phrase so often that we almost just glaze over and accept that it simply means that the person has a case of the "Blues". Consider this, however. What if they have not simply got the "Blues"? What if you simply have not got the "Blues"? How will you deal with it? How will you help them deal with it? Do you know what types of depression there are and be informed enough to help?

Depression comes in many guises. Some gradually build up over a number of years, getting worse as times go on, but, then it is not so noticeable because to yourself, family and friends you seem to have just lost your spark, become a bit grumpy. There are also types of depression that are far more instantly noticeable because they are caused by a specific event or physical change. The person can literally be stopped in their tracks.

To answer the question "What types of Depression are There?" accurately would take much longer than we are given here, so, I have taken the more notable Types of Depression here to discuss.

Clinical Depression

Otherwise known as Major Depression, this type of depression is, in general terms, identified by a lack of ability to cope. Sleep, concentration and coping skills are all disrupted. The person can no longer enjoy the pass times that they once did, will show more frequent signs of anger and immense sadness and a lack of sex drive. Normal life seems much more of and effort, and the sufferer ceases to show an interest in anything. This type of depression tends to last for years rather than be short term.

Dysthymia

This is a mild type of depression that tends to be more short term, perhaps anything from two weeks to two years. The distinguishing factor, however, is that is more than likely to be recurrent. Sufferers often feel that they have been depressed forever because they will only have brief periods of "normal" activity, and then feel depressed again, making it very hard for them to remember a time when they were not depressed.

Postpartum Depression

This is also called Post Natal depression. Most new mothers feel, at some stage, an episode of "The Baby Blues" - its almost impossible not to what with the changing hormone levels, lack of sleep, and the immense feeling of responsibility that follows having a child. This type of depression however, goes further than that. The mother (usually) has a feeling of despair, anything up to a year after the baby is born, and can even have the urge to harm the child or be unable to bond with them.

Manic Depression

This is also known as Bipolar Disorder. This serious type of depression is most obviously characterized by periods of immense gloom and major depressive state, followed by periods of euphoric joy. This circle of depression will see the sufferer spend days, week or even months thinking suicidal and harmful thoughts, switching, without notice, to a state of total joy and hyperactivity where their world moves at an amazingly fast pace. This type of depression must be helped by a professional.

The A to Z of Herbal Weight Loss

By Lee L Thomas

There are a far too many herbal weight loss supplements on the market to do a comprehensive survey of all them. These products come in a variety of forms including pills, teas and patches. Are any of them any good or can some of the ingredients do you serious harm.

Herbal weight loss product are usually sold as food supplements rather than medicines - this means that they do not have to undergo rigorous safety testing and, providing their claims are carefully worded, the manufacturers do not have to prove their claims.

In this article I have looked at some of the popular ingredients that are included in these products.

Acai Berry

The acai berry has been surrounded by an amazing amount of hype claiming that it can do everything from accelerating weight loss to curing diabetes. The acai berry is the fruit of the acai palm, a native of Brazil. The berries themselves contain very high levels of antioxidant which has led to them being called a "superfood". The level of antioxidant makes acai a worthwhile part of a healthy diet but to date their is no scientific evidence that they can aid weight loss. It is debatable what nutritional value remains after the berries have been processed for inclusion in diet supplements - it is probably better to have them in a smootie or drink the juice.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar has been believe to assist in weight loss for a long time. There are some studies of the effects of apple cider vinegar but results are preliminary. In a study of 11 people with type 2 diabetes it was shown to reduce blood glucose levels by 4-6%. Studies in rats have shown that it may be able to reduce blood pressure and help with high cholesterol, but these studies have not progressed to human trials. Laboratory studies have suggested that apple cider vinegar can kill cancer cells. In 2005 a study showed that it can make people feel fuller when taken with food, although this is probably true of any type of vinegar, as the vinegar used in this study was white vinegar.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant and can make you feel for energized. However, in order to significantly increase your calorie usage you would have to consume a very large amount of caffeine. Caffeine also has a diuretic effect; this means that it will cause the body to lose a larger quantity of water than it normally would thus increasing the need for fluid intake.

Chromium Picolinate.

This is a synthetic compound (so not exactly herbal). It is reported to regulate blood sugar levels and promote the burning of carbohydrates and fats. The balance of evidence is that chromium picolinate is safe, after earlier fears that it may be linked to DNA damage and cancer. The Food Standards Agency in the UK advises that most people can get the chromium they need from a healthy, balanced diet but for those who wish to supplement their diet with chromium the maximum level recommended in 10mg per day.

Garcinia Cambogia

Garcinia Cambogia is a native of Indonesia. It has a yellowish, pumpkin shaped fruit and has been used in traditional Indian medicine for oedema, delayed menstruation, constipation, intestinal parasites, rheumatism and bowel complaints. The extract and rind of the fruit is also used as a curry condiment.

It has been claimed that extracts of this plant (primarily the fruit) are an appetite suppressant, although there is no evidence to support this. The fruit contains hydroxycitric acid which is potentially damaging to the liver. This ingredient is used in the weight loss supplement Hydroxycut which has been linked to liver failure and death.

Gymnostema Pentaphyllum

Gymnostemna Pentaphyllum also known as Jiaogulan or Southern Ginseng. It is usually consumed as a herbal tea it is believed to increase the body's resistance to stress, anxiety and fatigue. It is also been shown to have antioxidant properties and act as a tumour inhibitor. In human studies it has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels.

Green Tea Extract

Green tea and other exotically named products such as Wulong tea have long been promoted as assisting with weight loss; there is no strong evidence to support this although most types of tea derived from camellia sinensis (including "normal" black tea) do have good antioxidant properties.

A lot of research to date has focused on a flavonoid called epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG; most of this research has not yet progressed beyond laboratory studies and they human trials that have been conducted have been badly designed.

A lot of herbal diet products contain green tea extract and EGCG; there is no evidence that this is going to do anything at all. You're better off just drinking tea.

Gymnema Sylvestre

Gymnema Sylvestre is a herb native to the tropical forests of southern and central India where it has been used as a treatment for diabetes for nearly two millennia. It has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels when used for an extended period of time. It also appears to reduce sugar cravings although the effects are short lived at around fifteen minutes.

Hoodia Gordonii (Hoodia)

Hoodia gordonii is a leafless, succulent plant which grows naturally in South Africa and Namibia. It has long been known by the indigenous populations of these areas as a treatment for indigestion and small infections. However, it is also used to suppress appetites when making long hunting trips - and it is this later use that has sparked interest. There have been attempts to manufacture the active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii but work on this was stopped due to problems synthesizing it; although there are also suggested of unwanted effects on the liver being caused by components that could not easily be removed.

There is only anecdotal evidence that Hoodia works as an appetite suppressant in humans and studies in other animals have been inclusive, some suggesting that it would be very difficult to consume enough of the active ingredient to have any effect.

Hoodia gordonii is a species threatened with extinction if international trade is not monitoted and it is illegal to export from Africa without the appropriate CITES certificate being issued by the proper authorities. A BBC report from January 2008 suggests that Hoodia gordonii is facing extinction due to the interest in it.

Senna

Senna is a herbal laxative and is found in many herbal weight loss products including some weight loss teas. Senna works by stimulating the colon but can cause dehydration and colon problems. There is also absolutely no evidence that it promotes weight loss.

St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is the plant species Hypericum perforatum and is most widely known as a treatment for mild and moderate depression and may be useful for the treatment of alcoholism. It has not been shown to have any properties directly related to weight loss.

St. John's Wort should not be taken in conjunction with other anti-depresents or triptans (a group of medications used in the treatment of migraine and cluster headaches). Evidence also suggests that St. John's Wort induces certain enzymes in the liver, this causes drugs that are metabolized by these enzymes to be metabolized more quickly leading to lower concentrations of the drug and reducing their effect. The list of drugs that interact with St. John's Wort in this way include oral contraceptives, warfarin, ciclosporin, amitriptyline, various anticonvulsant drugs, simvastatin, alprazolam, various HIV treatments, digoxin and theopyllins.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive, if you are planning on taking St. John's Wort (or anything containing St. John's Wort) and are on any other medication you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting the St. John's Wort.

It is also recommended that St. John's Wort should not be used in pregnancy or when breast feeding as there is no evidence of safety.

Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola rosea, also called Golden Root, Roseroot, Aaron's Rod is a plant that grows in cold regions of the world. It has been shown to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression; studies on whether Rhodiola improves physical performance have proved inconclusive.

Withania Somnifera

Withania Somnifera is a plant in the nightshade family having yellow flowers and red fruit. It has been reported to have anti-carcinogenic effects in animal cell cultures but has not been reported to have any particular effects in relation to weight loss.

These are just a few of the more common ingredients, it is important to remember that these herbal weight loss products are not licensed as pharmaceuticals and are not rigorously tested. In a recent BBC report some diet pills imported from outside the UK were found to contain amphetamines, which are a controlled drug and can have detrimental health effects.

In conclusion, very few of the ingredients that appear in herbal weight loss products have been shown to have any effect; in many cases there have been some studies conducted but often these have not progressed beyond the laboratory. Where human trials have been conducted they have not been well designed, randomized trials. The only thing that is going to guarantee weight loss is burning more calories than you consume.
