Are you looking for a way to help your child with anxiety?

Anxiety in children is a devastating problem for both parent and child, but one that doesn't have to be permanent. There are many steps that you as a parent can take to help rid your child of anxiety.

It's not uncommon for children to experience several forms of anxiety at some point while growing up. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) are the two most common forms of anxiety that plague children.

So what can you do to help your child with anxiety? Well, the very first step is to identify the problem. You need to be sure that your child actually has an anxiety problem before you decide to treat them for it. Most children exhibit many different behaviors that are often mistaken for anxiety.

For instance, your child may cry and hang on you before you leave your home. This is often a common reaction that many children have when faced with separation from a parent. However, you need to be able to determine if this behavior is excessive. There is a difference between expected behavior and excessive behavior.

Once you have determined that your child has a problem with anxiety, the first thing you should do is consult a licensed medical professional. They are really the only people who are fit to diagnose and treat your child properly. There are many great information products that can assist you in caring for your child, but it's up to your child's physician or therapist to determine the level in which the parent should be involved in treatment.

A common misconception is that taking your child to a medical professional will always result in treatment with pharmaceuticals. This is definitely not the case. There are many different accepted methods of treatment, like cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychotherapy and behavioral therapies that do not involve the use of drugs.

Herbal remedies may also be considered, but should always be approved by a physician. Many physicians have no problem allowing herbal treatments in conjunction with their own when it comes to helping your child with anxiety.

A change in diet is also a healthy way to combat anxiety. Cutting out caffeine and controlling sugar intake, along with minimizing the use of decongestants and asthma medications can play a big role in helping control anxiety in children. Initiating better sleep habits will also make a difference, such as setting regular bedtime and wakeup times.

The most important thing to remember is that anxiety in your child can be treated and will be cured. If you approach the problem with an open mind and willingness to help, you will find that your child is returned to the best health in no time and will remain anxiety free.

People often ask what can cause anxiety in children, they are young, free and shouldn't have a care in the world. Although in an ideal world this would be true, unfortunately there are hundreds of reasons that a child would suffer from a nervous condition.

Home life

Many children begin to get anxious because of their home life, maybe they are brought up within a rough family where their parents do not teach them the foundations that a child needs to gain confidence and experience of the world. In some severe cases, and as much as it hurts to say it - getting more and more common is the abuse and torment that some people put on minors which can have devastating long lasting effects, including anxiety, paranoia and even panic attacks.

School life

Anxiety in children can also begin from being bullied or tormented at school. Children can be extremely cruel to other children which can cause the child to isolate themselves and as the bulling continues finally begin to become ill or skip school altogether, often with out the parent knowing anything was even wrong. Children are incredibly easily led and can easily keep their mouths firmly closed if they are told to by the children bulling them.

I think it is the duty of all adults to protect children and to help alleviate anxiety in children by providing a caring home and be on the look out all of the time for signs of bullying at school. Teachers should equally be on the look out and not hesitate to react to a situation that could be causing any sort of anxiety in children.

If you notice a change in the child's behaviour or confidence changing, don't let it go, find out if there is a problem before it gets out of hand.

Kids are so precious, we should be doing everything we can to give them the best possible lives and removing any anxiety or worry that is in their lives.

The Anxiety Symptoms Children Display Aren't Always Easy To Recognize..

Recognizing the fine line between the anxiety symptoms children display and the extra-curricular activities today's parents are prescribing for them is almost impossible. To prepare children for success as adults, so many parents today are over-scheduling their children extra-curricular activities, often beginning when they're toddlers and continuing on through until they graduate from high school. Without the opportunity to dream and pretend and play with imaginary friends, or just to have the free-time to be alone with their own thoughts and emotions, parents don't realize that it could be this sort of lifestyle that's causing so much anxiety in children.

At the very most, once extra-curricular activities involved music or dance lessons or playing sports, etc. - but that was all. The rest of the time children had time to play at home with siblings or with the local kids around the neighbourhood - playing cowboys and Indians, building playhouses, surfing, riding bikes or just kicking a football around.

To be able to run across a field with the dog and fall down in the grass while the dog licks their neck is not wasted time. Children need these activities to experience the freedom and wonders of just being a child. It seems that family picnics and going to the beach or to the neighbourhood swimming pool have been long forgotten.

Reported recently in Newsforparents.org: "Self-initiated and unstructured creative play is the single most important activity that young children can engage in to develop on all levels, including neurological and cognitive growth." And according to webmed.com in a current report: "too much work and too little play can backfire and lead to depression, anxiety, perfectionism and constant stress in children."

At Day's End a Child's Body and Mind Need Time to Recharge..

Constantly having to run to and fro from one activity to another, a child's entire body is placed on alert to meet the stress, but the problem is, the stress invariably continues and the body and mind end up having little time to rest and recharge.

In recent years medical professionals have been saying that the easiest way to tell if a child is over-scheduled is to ask them whether or not they spend time daily with their family. Time spent with family doesn't have to be for long periods. Just sitting around with children, talking with them, listening to what they've been up to, even reading a story or playing a game with them can be enough.

By talking to children and listening to them, a parent might remember their child recently telling them about something they were truly excited about, but now find the child telling them that they've grown tired of the activity and lost interest. This could be a sign the child is over-scheduled and burdened with bouts of anxiety, or why the child is unable to sleep at night, or the reason they're having night terrors.

So many parents think they're doing children a service by providing them with all these organized activities. The worst part of it is, the parents themselves are usually convinced that the children enjoy participating in everything they are doing for them, while often the children are telling teachers and doctors that they'd rather have more time to themselves to play with their toys and their friends - but unfortunately, many children are too afraid to say anything for fear of disappointing their parents.

There is Good News!

Anxiety in Children - As It Is For Adults, This Also Holds True for Children

We all experiences anxiety at various times. We all know what it can feel like to be worried, nervous, fearful.

It's a part of life, right?

The only distinction between a young child and an adult when addressing anxiety is that most adults have learned to manage their anxious emotions, figured out how to face their worries and fears and carry on in spite of them.

Children Have Yet to Do This!

Youngsters who experience high degrees of stress and severe anxiety, or who suffer from panic attacks, usually have difficulty coping. This usually manifests as social phobias, intense shyness, obsessive thoughts, addictive behavior... and if not nipped in the bud during the early stages, the child's educational and interpersonal skills will suffer.

Is Your Child's Anxiety Out of Control?

When anxiety turns into a problem for children they usually find it impossible to control their thoughts and emotions, and often find it difficult to face up to the everyday challenges life presents them with. For these children anxiety is constant and considerably more invasive than an occasional surge of anxiety. Not realizing it possible for a young child to have such high levels of stress and anxiety, the condition is sometimes overlooked by parents.. and when overlooked, this presents a serious dilemma for both parents and child as the child develops, meaning the anxiety can then continue on through the child's teens and on into adulthood.

Anxiety Doesn't Have to Be A Permanent Condition.

Although childhood anxiety is not all that unusual (approximately thirteen out of a hundred children and adolescents experience some form of anxiety through the earlier years) still many parents don't realize that that there is an immediate, permanent, natural and drug-free cure available.

ADHD is a genetically influenced biological condition of the brain that affects an estimated 10% of school age children. The primary symptoms of the condition are inattention/distractibility, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity/restlessness. Most symptoms become apparent before the age of 4 and almost always before the age of 7 but may not interfere significantly with academic performance until the middle years. That said about eight out of every ten children with ADHD are academic underachievers.

In this informational article titled "ADHD and Anxiety in Children" we will explore the idea that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can produce anxiety in children.

Anxiety is a normal response to a threat or to psychological stress and is common in most children's lives but when anxiety occurs at inappropriate times, occurs frequently, or is so intense and long lasting that it impedes a persons normal activities, then it is considered a disorder. The most common anxiety disorder is called generalized anxiety disorder or GAD. For a doctor to make a diagnosis the symptoms must persist for six months or longer and a child must experience worry or anxiety as well as three or more of the following symptoms: disturbed sleep, restlessness, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and muscle tension. As you may have noticed two of three criteria for confirming this condition are listed as primary symptoms of ADHD.

Let's take a look at little Johnny and his travails in school.

Little Johnny is part of the 80% of school aged children with ADHD who underachieve academically. His life is filled with episode of normal daily anxiety ranging from worrying about his homework assignment to resigning himself to the fact that he will never be able to make the grades expected of him. Johnny doesn't know why he underachieves; after all he tries as hard as or harder than his peers. Year after year of poor grades and a certain amount of social isolation have lead little Johnny to become withdrawn, restless, and he has grown to dread each and every day of school. After all, what is the use in trying? End

I think you would agree that ADHD has filled little Johnny's life with anxiety but whether it would classify as a generalized anxiety disorder is a question best left up to the professionals. Nevertheless, this situation is one that plays out often in schools. For the child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder there lives are often filled with daily doses of anxiety, to varying degrees. It is important to understand that in most cases it is not their fault and without treatment they will continue to struggle and possibly fall victim to an anxiety disorder of some kind.

It is amazing how anxiety prone modern day society has become. Parents are afraid to let their children door knock for the scouts or charities and don't want them to ride a bicycle or walk to school in many cases. No wonder there is a market for products that advise on freeing children of unnecessary anxieties. One such product is an e-book called Anxiety Free Child. Is this combination of e-book and audio presentations worth buying? Read on for more details.

This program has been created by Rich Presta, who claims to have suffered from a lifetime of problems with anxiety and seeks to enable other people to benefit from his own technique for overcoming anxiety disorders. The program explains in detail causes of childhood anxiety and how if not treated effectively it will traumatise the child right into adulthood and potentially for life.

Presta makes the point that child anxiety is the outcome of the fight or flight response that has been in humans since the day of the caveman. It was always designed to protect us from falling victim of attack from wild animals for example. It only becomes a problem when a child or adult fails to learn how to control this impulse and it starts to generate a daily anxiety reaction when there is no sign of physical danger.

Why some people suffer from this condition from childhood is not entirely clear. It may have links with stressful or worrying events from an earlier period in the child's life. It may also be the outcome of genetic tendency towards anxiety inherited from one or both parents.

Many people turn to medication and other forms of expensive therapy if their child is anxious and having difficulty coping. The problem with medication is that it papers over the anxiety and has side effects such as mental confusion and drowsiness. While some expensive therapies also fail to deal with the problem effectively.

The Anxiety Free Child program will supply you with a tailored course of information designed to deal quickly and effectively in identifying and overcoming your child's anxiety problem. As well as Presta's own course outline, buyers will receive audios of therapists, psychologists and a host of top selling authors who have researched and written about anxiety problems.

The program interested me because I too suffered from severe anxiety problems as a child in spite of a secure and loving family. Ultimately I learned to overcome my problem through self-hypnosis and mind control. However, some people may find that their child needs this detailed course and would benefit from it.

Children go through many "phases" during their informative years and very often we will find that they undergo a change in their temperament and character. This is commonly due to an obvious anxiety problem for the child and can be easily attributed to a particular event in their lives. For example maybe a friend has moved away and they feel a little lost, or perhaps a grandparent or someone close has died and they are dealing with their feelings. Parental arguments or disagreements may be unsettling them or perhaps a change of house or school. All of these can trigger anxiety attacks in children and these must be faced by both the children and the parents.

Your child may start blowing small problems out of all proportion and a small problem may be enough to make them restless or even angry. They may seem nervous or hypersensitive and this could make a mountain out of a mole hill. This may have absolutely nothing to do with the main underlying problem but is something that can happen with any situation of everyday life.

Their sleep pattern may be disturbed and they may seem difficult to wake in the morning and reluctant to get up. Perhaps they have not slept well during the night and find it easier to sleep when everyone else is up and about. Any change in their levels of activity may be noticed - hyperactive at times and underactive at others. This may not follow a recognisable, obvious pattern to you and they may seem to change quickly and unexpectedly.

If you believe that your child may be experiencing anxiety in some respect, it is wise to get help for them as soon as possible. The best place to start is by educating yourself and finding out what you can about the signs and the problems that you child is facing. Do not be angry with them even if you feel that their behaviour is just naughty and disruptive. Trying strict and threatening discipline is often not the answer and does not face the facts of the underlying problems which are causing the feelings of anxiety that they are feeling. The Anxiety Free Child Program is a plan written to help you and your child break the spiral of anxiety and redirect your lives in a stress free direction. You can find more details regarding this and other great programs at the new website - I Have Very Tired Parents!

Personally, I do not think that there's a greater pain than that felt by us parents when our children are suffering. It is a feeling that hopeless feeling that I cannot really explain, because you want to help your child so bad but then you just do not know what to do. If only switching places was possible, but it is also not possible.

When it comes to anxiety it is made worse by the fact that most parents do not even understand it as well as they should. Most parents wait to get their child help until it is too late or until the child shows really disturbing symptoms for them to act.

This is unfortunate because the child has to go through all that suffering with no kind of understanding coming from the parents. Now with the Anxiety Free Child program parents have a great resource that will not leave them to figure things out by themselves.

Rich Presta, an anxiety sufferer from when he was a child is the creator of the program. He knows exactly what your child is going through and the challenges that are presented to a child that suffers from anxiety, because he went through all of that before he beat his anxiety and triumphed.

He understands anxiety from a child's point, and he also understands it from a parents point of view. Indeed when a child that you completely love is in pain, you also as a parent will be in pain, and you will do whatever it takes to help them.

The program comes in manual and audio form to give the parents the strategies that they need to stop the suffering of their child, on the other hand it also focuses on the child and the exercises that the child needs to go through to start feeling better as soon as possible.

The good thing is that once a child start doing the work necessary, they start to feel better almost immediately, because children do not have the patience to do something day after day that is not showing any results.

The course is very easy to go through and it has been laid out in a way that makes it easy to understand. I particularly like the audios that are specifically made for the child because it helps accelerate the progress of the child.

Experiencing anxiety and restlessness in the presence of foreign people or unfamiliar situations is a phase which a lot of children go through. This could be a three year old crying incessantly during her first couple of days in nursery school or kindergarten or it could be a baby's discomfort by his new babysitter. Current statistics indicate that 7% of adults and 4% of children suffer from some form of separation anxiety or another.

Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) on the other hand occurs when a child who is over 5 or 6 years begins to show unruliness in school, camp, or day care for an extended period of time, for example; over a 3-week period or more. This article will look at separation anxiety in children and what you need to know to help your child through this phase.

Separation Anxiety in Children - The Bad (Definition)

When a child becomes physically agitated in an excessive and inappropriate way due to the thought of an impending separation from his or her parent, home or primary caregiver, then s/he is suffering from SAD.

Separation Anxiety in Children - The Ugly (Symptoms)

The symptoms of SAD include, but are not limited to, the following; irrational fear that something bad will happen, headaches, stomach aches, nausea, temper tantrums, fear of being alone, nightmares, insomnia unless caregiver is close by, fear of being kidnapped or taken away, fear that primary caregiver might die etc.

Separation Anxiety in Children - The Good (The Cure)

Once you have established that your child suffers from this condition and that this condition may interfere with your child's normal daily functioning, home or at school, you should consult a professional therapist for help with dealing with this condition.

You can also opt for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as another alternative treatment for your child. Cbt will allow your child learn about ways to deal with his or her phobias by identifying negative thoughts and not external events as the root cause or trigger of his or her SAD. Cbt may also aid in your child's development of self-reliance skills. Cbt is a medication-free solution to this condition and therefore suitable for your child as s/he stands no risk of addiction to anti-anxiety medication or antidepressants.

Other natural cures you may want to consider for your child's condition include, but are not limited to, the following; psychotherapy, relaxation techniques, exercise routines, diet change, aromatherapy, and joining support groups.

Bear in mind that separation anxiety in children can be cured...in fact there is a technique that is guaranteed to rid your child of that SAD instantly and permanently...
