Basketball is a fast-paced game that requires players to run up and down the court and to keep moving most of the time on offense and defense. Basketball is such a physically demanding game that the players have to be in top physical condition. Otherwise the players will get tired and become ineffective during the game. To be in top physical condition, players should run basketball drills that help with their conditioning.

One thing many coaches like to do during practice to help their players get fit and stay fit is to keep a fast-paced practice going. This means that the players are required to keep moving throughout practice. They will be given a few strategic breaks throughout practice but the rest of the time they will be either moving during a basketball drill or moving to the next drill.

For example, most coaches will start a practice with stretching. This is very important so that no players pull any muscles during practice. Next, some coaches will have their players run some conditioning basketball drills. So, after the stretching is finished, the players will be required to run right to the baseline to begin conditioning drills. After conditioning the players will be required to jog to somewhere else on the floor and perform another drill. Then when they complete the next basketball drill they'll keep moving and go to the next of the basketball drills.

Some of the basketball drills should be more physically challenging than other drills. This will allow the players to catch their breath while they are still moving.

For example, the players could start out with conditioning drills. They could run sprints and complete footwork drills. For a possible footwork drill the players could sprint to a line, quickly cross their feet over the line 10 times and then sprint to the next line. Then the players could run some more sprints. After all these conditioning basketball drills the players will be winded.

Since practice just started, the players shouldn't have a break yet. So, they should get into pairs and one player in each pair should jog and get a basketball. Then one player should practice dribbling down the court at half speed. First the player should dribble to the right (with the right hand) and then to the left (with the left hand). As the player with the ball changes hands, he/she should practice a crossover dribble. The defensive player should work on his/her defensive posture, footwork, and positioning while covering the offensive player. Once a player dribbles down the court and back, the other player should go on offense and dribble up and down the court.

By dribbling at half speed and playing defense at half speed, the players will still be moving but they'll be able to catch their breath. They'll also be able to concentrate on the basics of what they're doing - dribbling and playing defense.

Basketball is so much about being in top physical shape that it's important for a coach to run a fast paced practice with a lot of conditioning basketball drills. This will help every player on the team to be fit and play an entire game without becoming overly exhausted.

There are as many basketball drills out there as there are basketball coaches, and everyone has their favorite drills. But there are some drills - top basketball drills - that add so much to practice that every coach should have them in their repertoire of basketball knowledge.

Most drills focus on a specific aspect of the game - we have shooting drills, dribbling drills, passing drills, rebounding drills, defense drills. Drills to develop the jump shot, drills to improve the chest pass, drills to teach man to man defense. But top basketball drills go beyond this; they require the use of most, maybe all these skills, and they require much more.

Here's three reasons why top basketball drills are so important:

1. They simulate game-like situationsNot only are many skills required in order to run the drill properly, these skills need to mesh together - maybe players need to pass, run, receive a pass, pass again immediately, run, receive the pass again and then take the ball in to the hoop, all without traveling (the zipper drill); or fast break down the court to play hard three on two basketball, and then fast break in the opposite direction to play hard two on one basketball (the 3-on-2 to 2-on-2 drill)

2. They will be controlled and offer excellent teaching opportunities It's not a free-for-all, not a pick-up game. The coach is able to stop play to make changes, adjust what is happening, explain why certain movements are being performed and why others won't work, so players become better players. Not better technicians but better players. Because this is a game simulation, and we don't deal with how to perfect skills, but how to use them in a game.

3. They are excellent conditioning drillsMost top drills are fast break drills, or have an aspect of fast break to them, and require players to sprint as in game situations and execute various skills as in game situations. Again, remember the focus of these drills - unlike skills drills, these top basketball drills are designed to simulate game play and provide practice in integrating all the skills players have learned into the game. Maybe players will be sprinting to catch up on defense against a fast break, playing hustle defense, rebounding and then fast breaking themselves down the other end of the court (the 2 on 1 fill in); or fighting for a rebound, outletting the ball and filling the far lane on a fast break, so they can shoot and rebound again at the other end of the court (the 11 man drill - my favorite).

Learning skills in stand-alone teaching sessions, or in skill-specific drills, is a necessity. Players can't learn a basic skill or perfect their techniques in a game - they need the focus and individual attention that comes from skills drills to do this.

But once they have gained some measure of adequacy with the skill, it becomes time to try it out in the game - that is our end goal, after all - and the best step towards that is to use these top basketball drills to prepare your team for game time.

Top basketball drills are great drills for pulling together everything players have learned. They aren't drills you will use much at the beginning of the pre-season, when you are teaching and reinforcing basic skills. But you will need them later on, as the season grows nearer and as your players' skills have improved to the point where it is time to teach them how to use those skills in game situations.

Coaching kids' basketball is a rewarding, fun experience. At times, however, it can be frustrating coming up with the right kind of basketball drills for your team. If your basketball team is composed of players who are new to the game or don't have much experience, your drills should cater to this and should focus on the basics of playing the game. Try this beginner drill to get your young players comfortable with the correct offensive stance.

Purpose of the Stance Footwork Drill

Stance is one of the most important factors of coaching kids' basketball. If your players use an incorrect offensive or defensive stance, they lose the ability to react quickly, and change direction with the flow of the game. The stance footwork basketball drill will help your players work on always having the correct stance during a game.

How the Beginner Drill Works

To begin this basketball drill, have your player assume the offensive stance, where their head is directly over their waist, their back is straight, their hands are kept above the waist, arms are close to the body, elbows are flexed, feet are about shoulder-width apart, weight is distributed evenly on the balls of the feet, and the knees are slightly flexed. Now have the player shift his or her weight too far back on their heels. Next they should lean too far forward, with their weight on their toes. After the player has made these two stance mistakes, have him or her correct their stance. This is a great way to reiterate the importance of the offensive stance in your team.

Coaching Kids' Basketball Tips

When you lead this drill, tell your players to keep the following in mind:

*The head should be over the waist to maintain balance
*The arms should be held close to the body
*The knees should be slightly flexed, and the feet should be at least shoulder-width apart
*The body's weight should be distributed on the balls of the feet

Variations of the Beginner Basketball Drill

If your team is ready for a more advanced version of this basketball drill, try a couple of these variations:

*Have your break up in couples before the drill. While one player is doing the drill, the other player should try to upset their teammate's balance by gently pushing on his or her shoulders.
*Again in couples, have your players try to upset their partner's balance by pulling him or her by one of his or her hands.

This beginner basketball drill is a great way to get your team acquainted with one another while reiterating the importance of a correct stance. It's a simple drill, but it's necessary for your team to be the best it can be.

When you talk to anyone about basketball the conversation quickly turns to the amazing three point shot, swishing a foul shot, the thrill of the basket and the dexterity of outwitting the opponent. You don't talk about basketball drills. Its not exciting and it's not riveting. In fact, they're boring and they are hard work, but every good player knows that the basketball drills are essential to their enjoyment of the game.

Basketball drills can be loosely broken into several categories: individual, challenge and team. The individual basketball drills include basketball handling drills, dribbling drills and basketball shooting drills. The handling drills are used to ensure that handling the basketball is like an extension of their body. They know how to pick it up, pass it and grab it from the air. The basketball dribbling drills ensure that they can move the ball from one area of the court to another. They learn to protect the ball from stealing and also learn to dribble through the opposing team when possible and passing when necessary. Finally, the basketball shooting drills help build shooting form so that the player can shoot, and sink, a basket from anywhere on the court: fouls shots, three pointers and under the basket!

Challenge drills are where the player is challenged by another player during the drill. Once some basic skills are learned it is important to practice them in game like conditions. Players know that they typically can't dribble the ball down the court without being challenged. Shooting the ball also doesn't happen without the opposing team trying to block your shot or at times intentionally fouling you. Foul shots are never taken in a peaceful stress free environment! Drills that are included in the challenge category are the basketball rebounding drills. If the shot doesn't sink it's imperative to get the rebound. The player is one of three to seven players striving for that ball.

Basketball team drills put it all together. The individual skills and the basketball plays are designed to put them ahead in the actual game. It is the team drills that bring the individuals together as a cohesive team and let them communicate with lightening speed on the court as they play to win. They need to run the plays until they are flawless. They scrimmage to the point of exhaustion and then they push some more. They have their shots blocked and their passes intercepted. As a team, their general basketball conditioning really pays off here. They have to be working out consistently so they have the endurance to run the court and pivot for those split second opportunities.

By themselves, none of these drills are glamorous. They leave players sweaty and exhausted. These are the things that players love to hate about the game. But, talk to a player on any successful team and they will tell you that the time spent on basketball drills has really paid off. The momentary sweat and discomfort is worth it when the ball catches nothing but net, the buzzer sounds and your team wins by two points!

It's a well known fact: in order for your players to be adept on the court, they need to practice. With practice comes a whole lot of youth basketball drills. While your team might think that drills are boring, they are totally and utterly necessary. Give this footfire drill a try during one of your earlier basketball practices - it's a great way to hone your players' stance and footwork skills.

Purpose of the Footfire Footwork Drill

It's imperative that your team understand the importance of basic basketball techniques. One of the most basic and important factors to the game is stance. Being able to immediately return to the proper defensive stance during a play is necessary. Once your players are comfortable enough snapping back to their stance, they will be better prepared to take on and react quickly to the opposing team.

How the Kids' Basketball Drill Works

To start, break your team up into couples. One of the pair will start out by giving the commands. When he or she gives the "Stance" command, the other player is to assume the defensive stance: head directly over the waist, back straight, hands kept above the waist, arms close to the body, elbows flexed, feet about shoulder-width apart, weight distributed evenly on the balls of the feet, and knees slightly flexed. When the player gives the "Go" command, their partner is to move their feet up and down as quickly as possible while maintaining the correct offensive stance form. This continues for ten seconds or until the "Stop" command is given.

Do three repetitions of this drill during basketball practice. Each repetition should last for ten seconds with ten-second rest intervals.

When you lead this kids' basketball drill, tell your team to keep the following in mind:

*Always double-check to insure that you are in the correct offensive stance
*Move your feet as quickly as you can
*Your goal should be to have your feet hit the ground forty to fifty times during each ten-second session

Variations of this Youth Basketball Drill

If your players want to try out an advanced version of this drill during basketball practice, tell them to try the following:

*Instead of sticking to ten-second repetitions with ten-second rest intervals, mix it up. Instruct the players that they are allowed to shout out the "Stop" and "Go" commands twice during each repetition. This will not only help your players work on their offensive stance, but it will also help them work on their reaction time so that they are always ready for anything during a play.

This is just one of many basketball drills for kids focusing on the offensive stance. Be sure to remind your kids that doing drills during practice will only make them stronger and better out on the court.

Basketball is a game that requires many skills. A player not only needs to be fast on their feet but also have a quick mind, because a game could change at any moment. They also need excellent hand eye coordination to not only hold on to the ball but also be able to pass it from player to player. Finally, a player needs keen depth perception to not only be able to sink a basket but also to realize where the ball is going to go next after a basket is tried. These different skills can best be mastered through practice, the following free basketball drills can help players become better at all these different skills that lead to a successful game.

One of the most effective free basketball drills is called the "Rattle" drill, which teaches players what to do when the ball changes hands in the middle of a game. The drill involves players starting in a defensive stance then a coach will shout go and the players must move their feet as fast as they can. During this time the gym must be filled with yelling and talking from other players to simulate the noise of a game. While all this is going on players must watch their coach because at any moment he points towards a side of the gym and all players must face that way. Then turn when a coach points another way all while keeping their feet in constant motion. To make sure that the players are turning in the right direction, they should yell as they reach the position that the coach has pointed to.

Another of the good free basketball drillsis the "Possession" drill. This drill emphasizes ball-handling and protecting the ball. It starts with gathering all the players at the baseline with everyone having a ball. One player stands at half-court without a ball, this person is known as the "possessed" player. Then other players advanced on the possessed player and try to go from half-court back to the baseline without losing the ball to the possessed player. The possessed player can knock it out of bounds, or steal the ball to make it theirs. Every player that loses the ball then becomes the possessed while the original player must sit out.

The "Horseshoe Passing" drill is an excellent and simple free basketball drill that helps players practice both shooting and passing. Players create two groups on either side of the key at the baseline and line them up. If the first player has a ball the player behind them does not and etc. all the way down the line. Then the coach stands in the middle of the free throw line. The player in the first line makes a v-cut around the coach and calls for the ball from the other player in the second group. The second player passes the ball to the first player and the first player makes a shot and also rebound the ball. The first player then passes the ball to the player behind the second player. This continues on until the end of the line.

Free basketball drills are a great way to maintain and improve player's skill. These three different drills will help players with the basic fundamentals but also players' needs specific drills that will help if the team has certain weaknesses that can be exploited during games. So coaches should not forget to ascertain their team's problems before choosing drills that will work best for their team.

How to Incorporate Drills into Practice

Girls basketball drills can be practiced by the girls alone and on their own time. They can also be used in practice to help girls learn the basics of basketball and improve their technique. Coaches should consider using girls basketball drills in every practice to build confidence, instill a routine, and practice basic concepts.

Girls basketball drills are the best way for a coach to work on improving her team's ability. Drills should make up the majority of practice, but there should be several drills so that players do not get bored.

To incorporate drills into practice, coaches should consider their current flow of practice. Do drills fit in after a warm-up and stretching? Do they fit in after a review of the previous game and a discussion about improvement? Wherever a coach believes drills fit in should be the main concern.

How Often to Practice Drills

Girls should be encouraged to practice drills as often as possible. The majority of drills for girls basketball can be done alone or with a group. For this reason, girls should strive to take these drills home and practice them as well.

In practice, coaches should consider how much time they can devote to drills. It does no good to teach a drill and then run through it only once. Athletes need time to learn and practice, so they need time to repeat a drill several times. A good rule of thumb is that athletes should do a drill five times. If there are multiple positions to the drill, they should do each position five times.

This may make a drill too long, so coaches need to adjust. The main point is that athletes need some type of repetition so they can consolidate their learning and not only focus on remembering which step comes next. By creating muscle memory, coaches allow athletes to focus on other areas of the drill.

Choosing Appropriate Drills

Many coaches struggle with decisions on which drills to choose for their athletes. If athletes are young or not fully mature, choose drills that are simple enough to learn quickly. Young athletes get bored and frustrated easily, and coaches need their athletes to be paying attention fully.

These drills should be easy to learn and work on a specific skill. Drills should be focused and short, so that athletes know what skill they are to improve and how to do it.

Older athletes may be able to handle drills that are faster-paced and involve more strategy. These drills become almost like a scrimmage, with players making quick decisions in order to reach a common goal. These drills can be longer and more complicated to keep athletes interested and challenged.

Practice can be a daunting time for any new basketball coach especially if you are a volunteer or first-time coach. The kids are looking at you as if you have the knowledge of Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Lebron James, and Larry Bird (Well, maybe not Larry Bird; his time was before your team was probably born!) rolled into one. As a coach, you want to use your time as best as possible and not only just have some clue what to do but win the game. I'm going to give you five great youth basketball drills that you can use for your next practice and any practice because these drills are designed to put your kids into game shape as well as help them progress to the next level.

1. Defense Slide Drill - In defense, you want your players to have both hands out, knees bent (not slouching of their backs!), and head up. This is the correct posture, and you should be militant about making sure the defense always has this posture. Also, players need to slide across the floor keeping the ball and player in front of them instead of chasing the man with the ball.

In this drill, use cones to mark off a 8-12 feet wide area and at least 30 feet long. One player in this drill will have the ball and the other will practice his defensive slide. The player with the ball will dribble left until he hits the sideline, then dribble right, until he hits the other boundary. The defensive player's goal is to force the offensive player to go all the way to the sideline without fouling or losing position. This will create a sort of zig-zag pattern and will help with defensive posture and sliding.

2. Line Sprints - All players line up on the base line on one side of the court. In this drill, players will be running continuously from the base line then to the free throw line, back to the base line, to the half court line, back to the base line, to the opposite free throw line, back to the base line, then all the way to opposite end of the court and back. So, the players will not stop sprinting until they have finished going to each line then coming back. At the sound of the whistle players will start going from line to line. The catch is that they have to touch the ground with their hand at each line. So, when they start and run to the free throw line, they touch the ground. When they run back to the base line, they touch the ground again. This process will continue until they are finished.

3. Basic Lay-up Drill - If you can teach your team how to make basic lay-ups with their left and right hands, you will do what many youth basketball coaches do not do. Therefore, this should be one of the youth basketball drills that you run every practice.

In this drill, you will divide your players into two lines at the half court mark on the left and right sides of the circle. The left side will be the rebounding line, and the right side will be the lay-up line. The first kid will have the ball and is to dribble as fast as possible (without the ball going flying!) to the hoop, jump off his left leg and shoot the lay-up with his right hand. The rebounder in the left lane will rebound the ball and pass it to the next kid in line (it may speed things up to use two or three balls). After this is done, then, you switch the process with the left lane being the lay-up line and the right will be the rebounding line.

4. Fast Break Lay-up Drill - Again, most of your points will be off of lay-ups, so if you can optimize this drill, you will lead an effective season. Like the previous drill, you will start with the right hand and then switch to the left hand. To save time, you can split into two groups that will be on opposite sides of the court.

In this drill, each player starts at the opposite side of the court and dribbles the ball as fast as possible until they make it to the opposite goal and shoot a right handed lay-up. While this is going on, players from the other side will be dribbling down trying to shoot lay-ups on their goal.

5. Full-Court Dribble - Again, if you notice, all of these youth basketball drills are helping your players learn how to control the ball and make shots that they should be taking in the game (ones closest to the basket!) Have you ever looked at NBA stats and seen who usually has the highest percentage of made shots? It's usually the forwards because they are right next to the basket.

In this drill, players will be dribbling down the court one way right-handed and come back dribbling only left-handed. This will help improve ball-handling, speed, and conditioning. You can also mix it up by placing cones for obstacles and other methods.
