By the time you get to the end of this article, you will fully understand how important it is to have a jiu jitsu workout routine.

Because I spent so much time and money studying books and DVDs about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves and techniques, I thought it was just going to clean house when I actually start to grapple with other beginners once I joined.

I've never been more wrong in my entire life!

The amount of times that I was caught in the simplest of submissions were mind-boggling! It was EXTREMELY humbling to say the least.

"Why?" You may ask.

Because my cardio and stamina or absolutely horrible!

Pay close attention. In a moment, I'll tell you why fitness is very important to all BJJ fighters.

There are just too many advantages to being a well conditioned BJJ fighter. This article will cover three of them. The three I'll talk about today are: mental clarity, ability to force moves, and better flexibility.

Mental clarity is what I want to talk about first because it is the most obvious. Studies show that when you are tired your mind goes into autopilot. And while on autopilot, the moves you make will be the ones that are instinctual.

A BJJ black belt with over 15 years experience will not have this problem, because proper techniques have been drilled into so much that they are instinctual. But the odds are, if you're reading this article, you're not a black belt. And most of your instinctual moves will consist of movements that give openings to your opponents.

Take arm bars for an example. When you get arm barred from the mount position, it's usually because you had your arms stretched out when they shouldn't have been. I have been caught by this on many occasions, even when I knew not to do it. Because I was too darn tired to think!

Another advantage could be that you are able to force moves on opponents. Often it happens that you could be very close to finishing your opponent, but his defense is too good. Thus, leaving both of you at a standstill.

Then what?

You could power your way to getting the tap, if you are strong enough. I've had to do that a number of times.

You've probably heard the old adage, "If you have to force a move then it's a bad jiu jitsu." But whether or not you use power or technique to win a match...

It is still a win!

The last and my most favorite advantage is flexibility. Anyone who knows anything about grappling, submission wrestling, MMA, or jiu jitsu will tell you how important flexibility is. What if you were blessed with natural flexibility? For a beginner it would be a saving grace for not knowing proper technique.

But what if he had a giant beer belly? If that's the case, then so what if your hamstrings easily let you touch your nose to your knees, your stomach would be in the way. Which makes breathing in those positions very challenging, to say the least.

If you look at yoga masters they don't have a lot of body fat. That's because it would hinder their flexibility and dexterity. The same can be said about BJJ fighters.

I'm sure there are an infinite amount of advantages when it comes to being a well conditioned BJJ fighter. Just three of those advantages are: mental clarity, ability to force moves, and better flexibility.

Jiu Jitsu is an ancient art that was practiced by the Samurais along with other weapons. It is an art form that began in the 20th century in Japan. It was brought to Brazil by the Japanese teacher Mitsuyo Maeda, who taught it to Carlos Garcia. But it was after the training of his four brothers that schools were opened. The art took its present shape when Royce Garcia, the youngest of the Garcia brothers, could not fight using the techniques of the art. The main criteria of Jiu Jitsu are that there is no violence or brutality involved in the art. But at the same time, you have to defeat him by using joint manipulation or choke. Jiu Jitsu teaches you proper coordination and time management too. Each training session is followed by a live training demonstration that helps in making you perfect. It begins with the white belt, when the student is not confident enough to execute the actions of the art as there is no control. You get the blue belt after this; it is now that you are able to execute the actions. This takes approximately 2 years. The purple belt gives you the confidence to perform the actions without either hurting your partner or yourself. The brown belt gives you the opportunity to sharpen your talents through practice. It is now that you can create a style of your own. Lastly, the black belt is given after 8-10 years; and from here, as the masters have said, that the real journey of a martial art expert begins.
