Speed is one of the most important aspects of sports.

If you're not quick and explosive, you cannot compete, especially at the highest level of sports.

In the past, most training programs focused on improving your vertical jump, and never addressed the issue of improving your speed.

It was therefore refreshing to finally see a quickness training course for athletes.

The Truth About Quickness Insider's System is a speed training program created by Alex Maroko and Kelly Baggett.

These two trainers are well known, and have authored several books between them.

Alex is the creator of the Effective Ball Handling program, while Kelly is best known for his Vertical Jump Bible product.

The program consists of 4 parts:

Part 1: The Truth About Quickness Insider's DVD.

This is the main component of the program. It contains all the information, exercises and video library.

Part 2: The Truth About Quickness Insider's Action Program Manual.

This part of the program lays out the training schedule.

Part 3: The Truth About Quickness Insider's Action Workbook.

This workbook lets you track and chart your progress.

Part 4: The Truth About Quickness Ultimate Insider's Warm-Up.

This is Alex Maroko's special warm-up routine that he makes all his elite athletes go through before each workout.

Liked

I liked several things about the program.

To begin with, the program is very simple to follow.

The workouts also take very little time to complete, and are based on solid scientific principles.

Disliked

I didn't like the fact that the quality of the videos was not that good.

Conclusion

I highly recommend the Truth About Quickness program for any athlete that wants to improve their quickness.

Alex and Kelly really know their stuff, and they have laid out a very simple and systematic way for you to improve your speed.

It is a great speed training program that will work no matter what sport you play.

The Truth About Quickness Insider's System is the brain child of two speed training experts: Alex Maroko & Kelly Baggett.

Alex is a young trainer who is also author of the Effective Ball Handling Program. Kelly is somewhat of a legend in the sports training community, and his most famous work is the Vertical Jump Bible.

Kelly is extremely knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to speed training, but he is not that good at communicating his ideas. Alex makes up for his lack of experience with very good communication skills. Combined, they deliver a great training program.

I'm not saying that Kelly cannot communicate or that Alex doesn't know speed training. In fact, they each do this better than 99% of the trainers out there. What I'm saying is that what one lacks, the other one makes up, and then some.

The Truth About Quickness program is very easy to understand and simple to follow. It also helps that the workouts are really short, and you can literally finish each workout in about 10 minutes. You also get videos of all the exercises so you know exactly how to do them, and the charts help you keep track of your workouts.

The only fault that I could find with the program was that the video quality seemed low. It was shot in a rugged gym, which looks like it has been used by lots of athletes. However, just because the videos were not shot in HQ doesn't do anything to diminish from the fact that the Truth About Quickness is a great speed training program.

If you are interested in getting faster and taking your game to the next level, I highly recommend the Truth About Quickness program. Alex and Kelly have put together some really amazing workouts that will give you great results if you follow them.

Daniel O is a former college basketball player who increased his vertical jump from a measly 20 inches to a freaky 40 inches. To learn more about how to jump higher and get quicker, visit his website.

Many people confuse speed and quickness, but these are two totally different things. It's possible to have one without the other, but ideally you'd like to have both.

Quickness is about reacting quickly, changing directions, and moving over a short distance.

Speed, on the other hand, revolves more around strength and power, and deals only with covering a lot of ground quickly in a straight line.

Both speed and quickness require acceleration. And to accelerate quickly requires strong muscles. Both are about explosion, blasting out from your starting position to reach your goal.

However, the similarities end there. When you think of speed, think of a 100 meter sprinter. The only objective is to get from point A to point B in the shortest amount of time possible, and everyone knows the shortest distance between point A and point B is a straight line. So speed is all about moving quickly in a straight line. It's linear, in other words. Two things matter most for speed: 1) the ability to explode and drive yourself forward, which comes from strong muscles, and 2) proper form and technique, which makes sure your motions are efficient and that you're not wasting energy.

Quickness, on the other hand, is not about moving quickly in a straight line. It's about being able to move quickly in any direction. In other words, it's multi-directional instead of linear. Quickness also entails agility and reaction time. You want your body to respond quickly to what you see on the field or the court.

When thinking about quickness, think of an NFL defensive back. The wide receiver knows exactly where he wants to go, but the DB doesn't. He has to simply react to what the wide receiver does. So reaction time and agility are key to quickness.

To become faster in terms of speed, you can keep the focus on the two things mentioned above: 1) muscle strength and 2) proper form. Going to the weight room regularly and practicing proper form in practice can help you build speed.

To become faster in terms of quickness, going to the weight room a lot won't necessarily help. Instead of focusing on your big muscles, quickness requires strength in the small muscles and tendons. Quickness drills and whole-body exercises are the best ways to improve quickness, as they improve your reaction time and condition your body to respond in a certain way.

In summary, speed and quickness are two totally different things, and different methods are required to improve in each area. The good news is that it is possible to improve both your speed and your quickness. You just need to approach each differently and make sure you're addressing the areas that will make you most successful.

How Quickness Drills Can Improve Your Response Time

Quickness and speed are often considered the same thing. However, quickness has to do with explosive strength. If you are able to react quickly, then you are quick. There are athletes who are quick but lack speed and vice versa. Steve Nash falls in the first category, while players with the likes of Mario Williams and Matt Jones in the second category. Quickness drills can improve your quickness aspect but your determination will be of utmost importance.

Reaction Time:

Reaction time is a component of quickness. It relates to how quickly you are able to respond to a stimulus. For instance, it has to do with how quick you can start running upon the sound of the gun fire. Amazing athletes are able to respond quickly. The game becomes easy when players have to deal with what they expect. However, the difficulty level increases when they are put in a challenge, where they have to react and respond.

For great athletes, the response time is around 0.1 seconds, while on the other extreme of the spectrum; the reaction time could be as high as 0.4 seconds. Quickness drills can improve it a little but drastic changes should not be expected. If you take players that are similar on all the levels, and put them through a series of tests measuring their quickness, you will find a marked difference.

Stimulants:

These are not linked to quickness drills but are important. If you want to become quick, then you should focus on your reaction time. Nonetheless, reaction time is naturally determined. Therefore, there is not much that can be done. However, if you are willing to work hard at it, you can improve your reaction time by 10% to 20% through quickness drills. Consuming stimulants that enhance andrenalin production in the body is another way to improve it. You could drink coffee or beverages like red bull. If you have ever observed carefully, then you would have noticed that after consuming such drinks, your senses become sharpened.

Overspeed Training:

Other than drinking coffee and red bull, you can focus on other speed workouts like overspeed training. The principle behind it is that if you put yourself in situations far challenging then what you usually face during your games, then you will be able to perform well during the actual scenarios. For instance, for car racers, the ideal speed is around 130 miles/hour. If you practice on a car stimulator that follows 200 or more miles per hour of speed, then you will not find it hard to manage your car in the real game.

Voluntary Quickness:

Quickness is not entirely an ability determined solely by the nature. It has a voluntary aspect to it as well. If your sport is boxing, you can train yourself to throw punches in a row as quickly as possible. You can also become quicker by doing quickness drills such as hurdle hops and low line hops. During these drills, you have to jump across a set line as quickly as you possibly can. These practices will surely do great to enhance voluntary quickness.
