There are many physical training programs on the web these days. Too many to count. Some aim at helping you to lose fat, others instruct you on how to build muscles or increase stamina. It seems that for every purpose there are so many of them to choose from.

However, if your sport is ice hockey, this vastness of programs may not be what you need. While these days it is largely accepted that on-ice training, while being the core for hockey training, is not enough in itself and must be complemented with off-ice, dryland training - these programs do not address your particular needs and demands.

Hockey players have specific skills they need to develop in order to become better players. General fitness programs, whatever their end goal is, do not fit you as a hockey player. You need a particular training program that takes your desire to develop your hockey skills, and the physical attributes needed for hockey, in an efficient and focused way. If your training program is not focused at the end goal of training for hockey specifically, it is wasting your time and perhaps even harming you - developing wrong skills that suppress and reverse your progress, and even compromise your physical status and expose you to injury.

That is just as true if you are a hockey goalie. The skills needed for goalie are different, in many ways, from the skills needed by skaters. The emphasis on which to base your training, even when the skills are the same, is also different.

While there are several programs out there designed specifically for hockey skaters, training programs for hockey goalies are more scarce.

One program considered to be a leader in the market in Ultimate Goalie Training. designed by Maria Mountain, a certified physical trainer from London, Ontario, Canada, it is designed as an overall off-ice program which puts its emphasis on the skills which are specifically crucial to goalies, from hand-eye coordination through lateral movement, ways to increase the butterfly flare, and much more.

Is it for real? I can't say I tried it myself, I'm not a goalie. But Kevin McKichan did. A former goalie on the Vancouver Canucks roster and goalie coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he employs the methods presented in Ultimate Hockey Training in the hockey goalie school he runs in Canada and goalie camps he runs throughout North America.

Pros and Cons of Rapid Response Goalie Training, an Off-Ice Hockey Goalie Training Program

An off-ice hockey training program for goalies is not something common on the Internet. Actually, an off-ice hockey training specifically meant for goalies is not that common in the real wold as well. It makes sense. It's in the sheer numbers. Every hockey team has five skaters and one goalie on the ice at any given time, if there are no penalties. An NHL team dresses up eighteen skaters and two goalies for each game. The proportions are evident. There are less goalies, so there are less programs for them. It makes sense. Rapid Response Goalie Training has become a standout in the world of dryland hockey training for goalies, a rarity within a rarity. Let's test its pros and cons.

pros:

it is the creation of Maria Mountain, MSc, of London, Ontario, Canada. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, she is a leading developer of dryland training programs for goalies and skaters alike - so she knows the difference between the needs of goalies and skaters. She knows which exercises fit both, and perhaps more importantly, which exercises fit one but not the other.
It is used by leading goalie coaches, such as Steve McKichan, a former NHL goalie (Vancouver Kanucks) who had his career shortened because of injury, and head become goalie coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Today, in the numerous goalie camps and schools he runs, he uses Ms. Mountain's methods.
It is highly focused on goalies. the understanding that goalies need a different off-ice exercise program than skaters is perhaps its strongest point. It doesn't make you waste time on exercises that are not specifically beneficial to goalies, or are not hockey-oriented at all.
It comes with a 100% money-back guarantee. From your risk point of view, that's important too.

cons:

It is entirely an off-ice training program. It doesn't tell you what to do once you put on your skates and load that mass of equipment on yourself, even though the exercises in it will help your performance on the ice a lot.
That is what it is in a nutshell.

Of course, this list of pros and cons only describe Rapid Response Goalie Training in a nutshell. visit HockeyHoller.com for more on Rapid Response Goalie Training and all about the wonderful sport of ice hockey.

Of all the training programs designed for hockey players, the vast majority are geared towards skaters and the need to develop aerobic endurance and the ability to repeat high intensity, short, intermittent bursts of energy expenditure. Strength and physical power is also a core component of these training aids. If you are a goalie, however, and are training with one of these programs, you are going about things all wrong and may in fact be causing your play to suffer.

There are several key features to any program that is geared to off-ice training for goalies as opposed to skaters. They include the need to avoid at all costs strength training like a body builder. Strength is important, don't get me wrong, but building huge biceps and a ripped chest may look good in the locker room, but will not lend itself to the agile quickness needed to be a top flight goalie. Training like a skater to endure short, high intensity shifts will do a goalie little good as they must stay mentally and physically strong for a full 60 minutes at a time. In addition, a strong core is a must for any goalie to be able to make the remarkable saves against top flight skaters and shooters and finally, specific training to improve hand to eye coordination is also needed to reap the rewards of all your hours of training.

I have reviewed several programs and found that while many exist, the one program specifically made to enhance a goalies game, that also seems to have the support of many people in the "know" is called the Ultimate Goalie Training System. This program takes you through a 12 week program and in the course of the training sessions will provide the goalie the training that will allow them to become stronger, faster, sharper and more confident, leading to a dominant player standing between the pipes.

As a physician and a hockey player I know the importance of appropriate fitness for the activity you are aiming to improve yourself in. For goalies, it truly is a different type of workout and fitness program that needs to be followed. I highly recommend taking a look around at different types of hockey off-ice programs and come to your own conclusion.

I have played organized hockey for 25 years and in those years have done everything I can do to become a better skater and right wing/center. I do what it takes to make the opposing goalie wish they never woke up the day he faces me. Now is the time to become the goalie every skater fears facing. Join me at http://hockeystores.org for more information on this and many other game changing programs as well as equipment updates and everything hockey. Happy hockey till next time!

A skillful soccer goalie in your team can make a huge difference in winning or losing games. The position of the goalie is the dichotomy of the team. It can be both fun and exciting. Unlike the rest of the players, the ultimate goal of the goalie is to stop scores.

Therefore, an expert coach knows that it becomes sometime necessary to offer some consolation and praise to the goalie to retain his self-esteem. Here go some valuable tips.
Pulling The Ball Tightly Into The Body

Train the goalie in a way that he should pull the ball tightly into the body when catching the ball. If you are coaching the team of younger players, it is always a great idea to teach them to cuddle the ball on the ground and keep their body in front of the ball.

This way, the shins, knees and feet will also help stop the ball. This method carries bucketful of advantages. For example, the number of injured hands and fingers by over ambitious opponents will be significantly reduced.
Handling The Ball Effectively

When it comes to handling the ball effectively, you should teach the young goalie to use two hand positions, the W and the Heart. Keep your watchful eyes open and observe the activities the goalie. If they are trying to trap the ball between their hands like catching a fly, rather than having the ball meet their hands, stop them from doing so and tell them the right way.
W Is Best Used For The Youngest Goalies

If the goalie is very young, the W is the best for him. This does not allow their hands to become as big as possible but at the same time, it also keeps them from doing the flytrap. Teach them to form the W by placing the tip of their thumbs together, with their palms toward the ball and fingers pointing upwards.

What is more, one of the required skills for each and every soccer goalie is their ability to move quickly side-to-side and general quickness.

The Hockey Goalie is one of the most important positions in Hockey, It's a fact that you cannot win a Stanley cup with the just great goal tending, but there has never been a team that has won the ultimate trophy without incredible goal tending. Over the past 25 Years the development and coaching for Hockey Goalies has become a precise science, unlike in the past where the hockey goalie's only training would be his team shooting on him at practices.

The hockey goalie is almost like a solo athlete they should responsible for their own development and training. That is where is Goal Coach becomes a tremendous advantage. Teams like the Harrington College Icebergs, have their own dedicated Goalie Coach, for their Bantam, Midget and College Teams.

This is generally the case for established professional, college and or Major Junior teams. Now teams like Harrington can take a dedicated good Goalie and make them into a great goalie. The skills involved in becoming a great goalie are very specific. They have to be trained daily and weekly, allowing chance to take over is playing with the possibility of limited development. Most Hockey goalies seek out goalie specific hockey camps in the off season, the off season is a very important time to practice and develop, however that training and development needs to continue during the season.

If you don't have access to a dedicated goalie coach, then you have to hire a Goalie Coach on a full time basis. This is a must if you want to make to the pros or even have a successful college career you cannot leave this aspect of your development up to chance. For Goalies it's about the performance and only performance, they cannot blame the team for not playing well, or even the forwards for not scoring enough goals and not even the defense for allowing too many breakaways.

It's about the record and the goalies performance. This is the hardest position to play because there are usually on 2 Goalies for each team, and generally one of the two goalies plays most of the games. The goalie plays the entire game, so this means they have to be in great condition.

Having a personal coach is not a luxury but a necessity for success as a hockey goalie, Hockey goalie schools are everywhere, picking one that is close to where you live is a great option.

Top 10 Fantasy Hockey Goalies for 2011-12

The goalie position has become the hardest by far to predict with certainty. The leading fantasy scorers fluctuate dramatically from season to season. While the top 10 here seem to be your safest bets for starting goalies, you could easily make a case for about 5 other guys to finish as this year's top scorer. That complicates your draft strategy. Typically, goalies will start to fly off the board late in the first round, and once the run starts, everyone tends to jump on the train, in fear that they'll be stuck with a backup as their #1 guy. My advice here is to identify your top 3 options. If you can snag one of them in Round 2, go for it. Otherwise, focus on offense and defense for the first two or three rounds, and collect what's left once the run for #1's has ended. You'll maximize your guaranteed stars that way, and avoid the heartache of watching your top pick fail you.

As always, I've divided the goalies into tiers where I see a noteworthy drop off.

TIER 1
1. Henrik Lundqvist (NYR)
For the 6th straight season (every season of his career), Lundqvist has kept his GAA under 2.5. While the leaderboard changes every season, this guy remains a steady top 5 option. It's that consistency that makes him your safest option for a #1 goalie this year. He quietly posted his best shutout and save percentage numbers of his career in 2010-11. Look for another fine season from the King.

2. Ilya Bryzgalov (PHI)
Normally, I don't advocate for highly ranking a high-profile player after a relocation. However, this one seems to line up. Despite their post-season woes, the Flyers generally support very good regular season goalie stats. Bryzgalov has been a proven commodity for several years now. While his GAA rose slightly last season, so did his save percentage. He registered another 7 shutouts to give him 15 over the past two years. Few goalies can match that. He's a solid Top 5 goalie right now that you can believe in.

3. Ryan Miller (BUF)
2010 was a disappointing year for Miller, mainly because he set the bar so stinkin high the year before. He still finished top 10 in most categories and registered 5 shutouts for the third straight season. Buffalo added some defensive help this summer and you should feel confident in a return to power by Miller this year.

4. Tim Thomas (BOS)
No matter what this man does, the questions will never go away. How long can he realistically keep this up? I'd say, short of an injury, you run with him until he breaks. A repeat of his ridiculous 2010-11 season (and post-season) is unlikely. But a complete crash and burn is equally unlikely. However, bear in mind, Boston does have a quality up-and-coming in Rask who will demand more playing time, if only to rest Thomas after a long grueling season. Rank him high, but not at the top.

5. Roberto Luongo (VAN)
Luongo recovered nicely after a disappointing season in 09-10. He posted career bests in GAA and save percentage, yet faced major scrutiny early in the playoffs. Despite the presence, and constant threat, of Schneider behind him, this is Luongo's crease. He's a solid #1 goalie and should put up top 10 numbers again.

TIER 2
6. Corey Crawford (CHI)
It seems that Chicago finally has a #1 goalie that fantasy owners can believe in. With a different man assuming the top job seemingly every season for the past decade, Crawford will enter this year unchallenged as the Hawks top goalie after an outstanding rookie campaign. With a GAA of 2.30, he was among the best in the league, and should remain in the upper tier this year.

7. Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT)
Fleury endured perhaps the toughest season of his career last year, and came out on top. After a horrible start to the year, and calls for his demotion to Scranton, he rallied his game (and the team's) and went on a tear in early winter. Ultimately, he played so well that some gave him consideration for the Hart trophy. Expect him to build on his strong numbers from last year and perhaps even top them.

8. Tomas Vokoun (WAS)
For the first time in his career, Vokoun has a chance to put up some serious totals in that elusive column titled "Wins". He is consistently among the leaders in save percentage and shutouts, but due to geography, he often struggles to approach 30 Wins. Assuming he can stay healthy and fend off the youngsters, he may be set for his best season yet.

9. Pekka Rinne (NAS)
Rinne has steadily risen to the top tier of fantasy goalies over the past 3 seasons. Last year, he squeaked into the top 5 in total fantasy points. So can he get back there again this year? The makeup of the Predator lineup hasn't changed much, and the emphasis will remain on solid defense, which certainly helps his chances. Rinne has posted shutout numbers of 7, 7, and 6 over the past 3 years, meaning he can give your lineup a big boost on occasion. Consider him a low-end #1 or a great #2 option.

10. Jimmy Howard (DET)
63 Games, 37 wins. The stat line reads the same for the past two seasons. But when you get to GAA and Save percentage, it starts to break down. Howard tanked in those two categories last season, yet remains the number 1 (and only) option on a Detroit team sure to pile up the wins, as always. If he can get those numbers back to his rookie standard, Howard's a clear-cut #1 starter. Even with his struggles, he's still worthy of an early pick this fall.

There is a simple way to build the ultimate strength and power in your skating, shooting and overall training and performance in hockey.

It doesn't have anything to do with the typical weight training and it has to do with the application of weights that will propel your hockey strength and power to the ultimate level fast.

Although free weights are good in building strength and power they aren't use in the proper way for hockey players.

Let me explain what I mean...

The problem with the way the majority of hockey players do weight training is they go to the gym and do bench press, back exercises, leg squats etc... but they don't really build the proper muscles they need in the game of hockey to the ultimate level.

The following is the magic or almost secret way of building the ultimate strength and power in your game:

You must buy yourself wrist and ankle weight between 1-2 pounds.
Once you've strapped your wrist and ankle weights securely then you're in business.
Now when you practice your skating, shooting and all your movements and techniques in hockey then you're using all of the exact muscles that you'll be using during the game.

Explanation:
It's not the amount of wrists and ankle weights that is important. You only have to use even a 1 pounds wrist and ankle weight to start with. The most important thing to remember is that you will using the weights and a resistance training tools to build all the exact muscles that will be needed in playing hockey.

Review:
Just use small wrist and ankle weights that can be strapped on your wrist and ankles securely and just go through all the movements and techniques that you usually go through during your practice but with one difference which is you're training the appropriate movements and techniques with weight training automatically.

Hockey - What is the Biggest Secret?

There is one big secret that if hockey players knew about would totally change their practice and game results. This secret would enable them to achieve and maintain a peak performance level without those horrible slumps that everybody seems to experience and desperately want to get rid off once and for all.

Here is the process that all hockey players go through in their sport:

They learn the basics
They train hard
They get in great physical condition
They practice their movements and techniques for thousands of times
Then they HOPE that everything in their sport will work out automatically

Here is the process they go through when experiencing a poor performance or performance slump:

They train hard
They get in better physical condition
They practice their movements and techniques for thousands of times
Then they HOPE that everything will turn out ok by doing all this hard work.

NOTE:

Do you see a pattern here that almost looks like a continuous circle that keeps going round and round without any way out?

Here is the biggest secret that will prevent some if not all of the performance problems in hockey:

The secret has to do with TIMING! (Ability to be at the right place and at the right time while synchronizing your whole body to achieve this level)

Timing in hockey has to do with how the mind and body communicates and is synchronized together in order to achieve peak performance levels fast. Not only will you achieve this level faster but it will give you control over your practice and performance to elite levels.

Why does this TIMING breakdown for hockey players?

Timing breaks down because hockey players have no clue about what timing is...who should train it...when should they train it...where exactly should the technique be used...why it works or doesn't work...and the ultimate is knowing HOW to implement it in your game.

The biggest reason why Timing breaks down is because there is a so-called electrical short that prevents the natural flow of information from going back and forth from the mind and body. Once you know how to eliminate this so-called electrical short, then you'll be able to control and achieve perfect Timing in anything that you do in hockey.

Hockey - How to Choose Your Child's Coach

New hockey players that start will usually accept the coach that is available at the time because they want to play hockey and they don't really care who the coach is. If you have a choice hockey players and parents should be aware of certain key things that will help their kids to achieving maximum levels in the shortest period of time.

Before you choose a coach make sure you do the following:

Ask other parents and hockey players if they know about the particular coach.
Meet with the prospective coach to find out what his training and philosophy is regarding hockey.
Watch the coach in an actual hockey practice.
Watch the coach in an actual hockey game.

Here's what you should be looking for depending on the personality of your child:

If your child has the type of personality that is somewhat aggressive then you should be looking for a coach that is aggressive in nature because your child and the coach will get along just great.
If your child has the type of personality that is timid and needs encouragement, then make sure that the potential coach is the type of coach that is understanding and makes sure that your child is given not just the hockey techniques but the mental focus, encouragement and development that is required.
It doesn't matter if you would like your child to become a professional hockey player or even just win a college scholarship. At first you must make sure that you give him the appropriate technical knowledge and development that will enable him to make up his mind on exactly in which direction he might want to take later on in life.
Maybe your child is only wants to play and have fun and then decide later on if he wants to become more serious about the game of hockey.

Note: Remember as the parent it's your job to make sure that your child gets into a situation that will help him to develop not only his hockey skills but his personal development to the ultimate level.

When it comes to fantasy hockey drafts, the temptation is to pull out last year's stats and pick the guy who had the most points. A lot of bad assumptions go into that philosophy. For one thing, you ultimately end up with a host of one-hit wonders and miss out on the rising players. We've assembled here a list of players that peaked last year or had a fluke of a great season. These chumps will get drafted far earlier than they should. Don't get caught up in the hype. Sit back and let the less-informed GM's waste a pick, while you go for value.

Offense

Michael Cammalleri- Cammalleri posted enormous numbers last season, playing along side Iginla. He won't have anywhere near that talent playing on the dysfunctional Canadians next season. If you were able to cash in on his success in 08, it's time to sell high and watch this stock correct itself down to the 70 point range.

Jeff Carter- Carter enjoyed an amazing breakout year in 2008 and even challenged for the goal scoring title. But was this an indication of things to come, or another Brian Gionta? Best guess is somewhere in between. Carter disappeared in the playoffs a bit. Expect him to drop off a little from last season into to 30 goal range.

Patrik Elias - If you draft off last year's stats alone, you're going to be that sucker picking Elias way too high. He's still a fine player, but there's no chance he's going to finish with a point-a-game again in 2009. He's past his prime and has a history of inconsistency. Steer clear and let somebody else make the mistake early on.

Brad Richards - Richards built his reputation on one great season and a Conn Smythe trophy. Beyond that, he's been a consistent disappointment in terms of fantasy production. Sure he may be overlooked due to his injury last season, but he may also be overlooked, because there about 80 better options out there. Don't believe the hype!

Martin St. Louis - St. Louis is a tough book to read. The last three seasons have produced point totals of 102, 83 and 80, so he should be considered a fantasy star. But something just doesn't feel right. Maybe it's his team. Don't put too much faith in him putting up another 80 point season in 2009.

Todd White - White had a breakout season in 2008. Another word for it may be "fluke". With new talent arriving and emerging in Atlanta next season, White should slide back down the depth chart and find himself returning to mediocrity.

Defense

Marc-Andre Bergeron- Over the past five or so seasons, Bergeron has been drafted in the middle of the pack. If that happens this year, you should laugh and point. Bergeron won't crack 30 points this season.

Andrei Markov- It would be a mistake to think Markov will come anywhere near the numbers he put up last season. Registering 64 points on a lousy Canadians squad was the highlight of Markov's career. Expect him to drop off by at least 15 points in 2009.

Mathieu Schneider- Another oldie-but not so good any more. It would be a good season if he finishes with more than 30 points. An even bigger challenge would be for Schneider to play in 70 or more games. There are too many better options out there.

Goalies

Scott Clemmensen - What a shame. Marty got better. Clemmensen actually was in the top 10 at the all-star break, only to lose his job to the legend. With a new start in Florida, it's going to be more of the same, as Vokoun will occupy the net most nights. Ignore the numbers and ignore Mr. Clemmensen on your draft list.

Rick DiPietro - DiPietro is supposed to be a great goalie, and he surely will be passed on by many GMs. Make sure you are in that crowd. The Islanders are a train wreck and there are no guarantees that he will play consistently after so much time off, if he plays at all. After all, they signed 2 more starting goalies this summer for a reason. Steer clear. Be warned.

Miikka Kiprusoff - Despite his high win total, Kiprusoff's vital stats have slid consistently for the last 4 seasons. Having Sutter back behind the bench may bring some sanity back to the Calgary blueline, which may give him a boost. So, don't write him off, but don't overrate him either.
